Codebase hardening
Give a product that already works the foundations to grow on: typed, tested, structured and deployable, so new features stay quick to ship.
For: Products with traction where each new change takes longer than it should.
Free, 30 minutes, no preparation needed.
What’s included
- Refactoring into a clear structure with strict TypeScript
- Tests on the paths that matter, written from acceptance criteria
- Proper loading, empty and error states in the UI, accessible to WCAG 2.2 AA
- GDPR fixes from the review: consent, data minimisation, retention jobs, and data export and deletion
- CI, linting and type checks so the next change can't quietly break it
- Handover notes so your team can keep going
Signs you need it
Every change breaks something else. Some files nobody wants to touch. Fixed bugs come back. Deploys are a manual ritual. The product works and users like it, but the codebase has quietly become the bottleneck.
How I approach it
There's no big-bang rewrite. I work in small, reviewed pull requests, starting with the safety net: strict types, CI, and tests on the flows that make money or hold personal data. Then structure, one area at a time, so the app keeps shipping throughout. Priorities come from the readiness review if there was one, or from a short audit at the start if there wasn't.
What changes for your team
New features take less time, because the code makes it obvious where things go. Mistakes get caught in CI instead of by users. And the handover notes mean your team owns the result, not me.
It isn't a rewrite in a new framework. If a rewrite really is the better option, I'll explain why before any work starts.
How it works
- 01
Talk
A call about what you have, what is breaking and what has to ship.
- 02
Scope
An audit or a short spec with acceptance criteria, so we agree on done before any code.
- 03
Build
Small, reviewed pull requests against the spec, deployed to previews you can click through.
- 04
Hand over
Docs, tests and a walkthrough, so the codebase is yours, not mine.
Got a demo that needs to survive real users?
Tell me what you have and what has to ship, on a call or by email with a link to the repo or the live app. I'll tell you honestly whether I can help, and what I'd look at first.
